Cisco Introduces SaaS Application Monitoring with ThousandEyes

Cisco has launched a new service that monitors and troubleshoots SaaS application performance through its ThousandEyes platform.

This service, unveiled this week, utilizes data gathered by ThousandEyes to create a comprehensive map of real-time application outages globally. The objective is to expedite troubleshooting and monitor any performance issues that could breach service-level agreements.

ThousandEyes, acquired by Cisco in August 2020, aims to provide visibility into outages in areas outside enterprise control. This new service applies the same telemetry techniques to map SaaS application performance.

The service allows customers to delve into specific outages, identifying their extent, the location of involved servers, and the nature of the issues.

A general view of SaaS outages can be seen on ThousandEyes' internet map, but accessing the monitoring and troubleshooting features will require an additional license, with pricing based on the level of visibility needed.

Competitors like Zscaler and Gigamon also offer similar services, but they often focus on individual application visibility or synthetic transaction performance metrics.

According to IDC analyst Mark Leary, the latest Application Outages service presents two key advantages: enhanced visibility for quicker IT troubleshooting and the capability to monitor application performance over time, enabling companies to set benchmarks for network performance against their service providers.

“Being able to measure the services you’re getting from the service provider… goes a long way in helping you fix the problem in partnership with your service provider,” emphasized Leary.

Additionally, in a recent announcement, Cisco disclosed its partnership with Meta to design and deploy two new switches, Wedge 400 and Wedge 400C, leveraging advanced technology for better performance and higher port density.
